Vic Saunders honoured with Surrey Leopard Award

At the club’s President’s Charity Drive held on Monday 28 May in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society, club stalwart Vic Saunders was presented with the prestigious Surrey Leopard Award by Surrey County Bowling Association President Roger Lanham, supported by SCBA Senior Vice-President Peter Marshall, Junior Vice-President Joe Cable, and SCBA Secretary Derek Harvey.

The Leopard Award is given “in recognition of outstanding and distinguished service rendered in the administration and management of the game at club level”. Nominations are assessed by a County committee, and only a very few are successful in any one year.

Auriol President Shirley Tracey said that she was delighted that Vic’s invaluable long-term contribution to the ongoing operation of the club had been recognised by the bowls community in Surrey. She went on to thank Roger and his ‘top team’ from SCBA for coming to the club - on a Bank Holiday! - to present the award, and to support her Charity Drive.

Vic Saunders said that he had had no inkling that he had been nominated for the Leopard Award, and was surprised and delighted to have received it. There to witness the presentation, and to share in Vic's delight, was his wife Gladys and their son Gary (pictured below).

Auriol has had just three previous Leopard winners in its 50+ year history, with Eric Baker successful in 1987, Bill Osborne in 1995 and founder member Lionel Sellers in 2013, so Vic joins a very select band.
